Over recent years, flexible work arrangements and advancements in digital meetings have transformed the way we collaborate. We can now connect across different locations and time zones, making it possible to include individuals who might have previously been excluded.

A meeting is no longer just a fleeting, one-time event. Instead, it can be viewed as a “digital artifact” that can be explored and analysed in powerful new ways.

“A meeting has evolved from being a moment in time to becoming a knowledge object that I can query and ask questions of,” says Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President of Modern Work & Business Applications at Microsoft. “This represents a whole new perspective on human interaction.”

And it comes at a critical moment: Since February 2020, people are in three times more Microsoft Teams meetings and calls per week. According to Microsoft’s 2023 Work Trend Index, they see inefficient meetings as their top productivity disruptor.

With Copilot in Teams, people can consult a meeting and interact with it after the fact—even if they couldn’t attend—allowing everyone to reclaim time for creative and focused work so they can truly thrive. Here’s how it works.

Get more out of the meeting you’re in

Generative AI enables you to extract more insights from a meeting in real time. With tools like Office 365 Copilot and New Bing Chat, you can analyse, organise, and synthesise discussions during the meeting, provided it's being recorded. This is done through a chat interface that only you can see.

If you’re struggling to engage in the conversation, you can ask Microsoft Office Copilot to help. For example, you might say, “Rephrase what she just said; I didn’t quite catch it,” or “What would be a good question to ask the presenter?” If you were multitasking and missed something, Copilot can repeat it for you.

Copilot can also help ensure that everyone is included: If you’re the meeting host, you can ask Copilot, “Who hasn’t had a chance to speak?” or “Who was cut off?” In short, it opens up new ways to actively engage with a meeting in progress and helps you see the bigger picture.

Get up to speed on meetings you missed

Most of us can’t attend every meeting we’re invited to. Whether it's due to overlapping schedules, vacations, or other commitments like picking up your kids from school, missing meetings is inevitable. Typically, you might catch up later by reading through the transcript or watching the recording. However, Office 365 Copilot takes this a step further, allowing you to interact dynamically with the digital record of the conversation, so you can quickly get the answers you need.

With Microsoft Office Copilot and New Bing Chat you can receive a comprehensive recap of the meeting or ask specific questions like: “What topics were discussed?” “What decisions were made?” and “Did anyone mention my name?” Additionally, Copilot can analyse and report on mood and sentiment, answering questions such as: “Was that an easy decision?” “How did the group feel about it?” or “Did anybody dissent?”

“You can gain such a detailed analysis of human interactions that it truly broadens your perspective,” says Spataro. “In the past, a meeting would happen, and it would be over, with maybe some sketchy notes taken. Now, that entire interaction can be examined from multiple angles,” all facilitated by tools like Microsoft Images AI.
